- Consist of 34 provinces (Badakhshan, Badghis, Baghlan, Balkh, Bamyan, Daykundi, Farah, Faryab, Ghazni, Ghor, Helmand, Herat, Jowzjan, Kabul, Kandahar, Kapisa, Khost, Kunar, Kunduz, Laghman, Logar, Nangarhar, Nimroz, Nuristan, Paktika, Paktiya, Panjshir, Parwan, Samangan, Sar-e Pul, Takhar, Uruzgan, Wardak, Zabul)
- Gain independence from the UK on August 19, 1919
- Last Constitution ratified on January 26, 2004 and its mixes a legal system of civil, customary, and Islamic laws
- The current ruler of Afghanistan is Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai
- They have 3 branches of government-
- Executive Branch: Chief of State (President of Afghanistan), Cabinet (25 appointed ministers), Head of Government (President, CEO, 2 Vice Presidents)
- Legislative Branch: bicameral National Assembly consists of the Meshrano Jirga or House of Elders (104 members, President nominates 34 and 17 must be women). They can convene a Grand Council that meets for discussion of independence, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Women hold a total of 64 seats
- Judicial Branch: a supreme court consisting of 1 Supreme Court Chief and 8 other judges
- Some of their allies include: Turkey, United States, Japan, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Italy, India, China, Canada, Russia, United Arab Emirates
- Most of these allies came from treaties during wars and many of these countries have embassies in Kabul which station troops for the protection of Afghan people
- Many of their relationships are with outside countries, not from the Middle East with the exception of Turkey
