- A recent earthquake has hit the Pakistan-Afghanistan region
- The quake occurred under the Hindu Kush mountains
- As of right now the death toll is above 330 people; 228 of the deaths occurring in Pakistan and 78 confirmed deaths in Afghanistan
- The death toll is likely to rise as the most devastated areas are very remote and communication has been cut off.
- Luckily, the tremor was 200 km deep; a similar earthquake at a shallower depth would have caused more ground shaking and thus more damage.
- The quake has caused landslides and building damage.
- Several aftershocks followed the earthquake, which was centered in a remote area in Afghanistan that borders Pakistan, Tajikistan and China.
- More than 10,000 homes were damaged in northwest Pakistan, while Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's office said that more than 7,600 homes were destroyed and 558 people injured in Afghanistan.
- Zurqun Nain, 70, said his extended family was living at a relative's home after the quake damaged his house. "I had my own home before the earthquake. Now I am homeless at this old age," he said.
- To make matters worse the most impacted regions are also the most secluded. Rescue crews are having trouble providing necessary food and shelter these survivors desperately need.
- “We are extremely concerned for the safety and well being of children,” Karin Hulshof, the regional director of UNICEF., stated, “who are already the most at risk in any disaster and are now in danger of succumbing to the elements as temperatures plummet.” Only time will tell if rescue efforts will help save these kids.
